Konomie Island Environmental Education Centre

2023 has been an exciting year for CCC. Our Coordinator & KIEEC Secretary, Sophie George, and Conservation Trainee, Summer Stringer, have been busy bees on Konomie Island working alongside the Konomie Island Environmental Education Centre PnC President Jeff Krause and Konomie Island Environmental Education Centre Principal, Andrew Gill, CCC volunteers, Capricorn Coast Land Care, Cap Coast Eco Warriors and Birdlife Capricornia rehabilitating the Centre!

Since 1996, a part of the Island has been operating as an education centre providing students from all across Queensland a once in a lifetime learning experience. Schools and Universities that visit the centre get to explore the incredible island from the land or the sea discovering all of the ancient beauty and secrets it holds. Konomie Island is a part of a group of 16 Islands belonging to the Woppaburra People and has a grand story to tell. CCC would like to say a massive thankyou to the Traditional Owners and Elders of Woppaburra for welcoming us onto their country and allowing us to Care for Country. Always was. Always will be.

CCC Coordinator, Sophie George has been working with the PnC coordinating events, volunteers and First Nations engagement all throughout the year. The PnC in collaboration with CCC,  was awarded a grant for the Queens Jubilee where the Cap Coast Eco Warriors spent a day planting trees. Earlier in the year, the Centre was also voted finalist for ‘The Equipped Outdoors- Outdoor Education Award’, from Outdoor Queensland and nominated for the Konomie Island Adventure Day – which was led by Woppaburra Saltwater Aboriginal Corporation and Principal Andrew Gill.

Towards the end of the year, Sophie and Summer rallied the troops and began reconstruction on the greenhouse that was unfortunately destroyed in cyclone Marcia in 2018. The project is still ongoing, however, some major progress has been made. CCC would like to say a massive thank you to all of our volunteers, members and friends for helping us make this happen!
