From Waste to Worth: How Reuse Builds a More Resilient Central Queensland

At Capricorn Conservation Council, we know that sustainability starts with the choices we make every day about what we consume, what we discard, and how we value the resources around us.

But we also know local action alone is not enough. That’s why we’re proud to work alongside national allies like the Boomerang Alliance, whose campaigns are pushing for real change in how Australia handles packaging, plastics and product responsibility. Together, we can build a future where reuse is the norm, and waste is no longer treated as inevitable.

Reuse: More Than a Trend

When we reuse or repair something, we’re not just saving money, we’re showing respect. Respect for the resources that went into making it, and for the land, water, and people affected by its life cycle.

Whether you’re:

• Re-covering an old chair,
  
• Storing pantry goods in used glass jars,
  
• Donating excess household items to a local op shop,
  
• Or fixing a faulty appliance instead of replacing it…
  

…you’re participating in a form of everyday environmental stewardship. It’s a quiet but powerful response to overconsumption and waste.

Even seemingly minor choices such as bringing a reusable coffee cup to your local café or using a refillable water bottle can significantly reduce the amount of waste we generate in daily life

Reuse Needs More Than Goodwill — It Needs Policy

While grassroots action is essential, systemic change is critical. That’s why CCC is supporting the Boomerang Alliance’s latest national campaigns efforts designed to move Australia from voluntary promises to enforceable policies that tackle our waste problem at its source.

🔵 ‘From Promise to Policy’ Open Letter to Government
Calling on the federal government to pass meaningful packaging laws this year, and to stop letting industry off the hook with weak voluntary standards. You can sign the open letter here.

🟢 The National Cup Pledge
Urging Federal MPs to lead by example by giving up single-use takeaway cups, and committing to reusable alternatives – showing leadership in the fight against everyday plastic waste. Email your MP the Cup Pledge and push the to ditch single-use cups and make the switch to reusables. 

🟡 Expansion of the Container Refund Scheme (CRS)
Boomerang Alliance is calling for a national approach to boost the return of used containers and better benefit the community. Such a change could see return rates boosted to 90%, an increased demand for recycling jobs, and over 1.3 billion more containers recycled per year. Call for a 20c refund on your containers and the inclusion of wine and spirit bottles by signing here.

🟠 The National Supermarket Plastics Audit
In collaboration with Australian Marine Conservation Society, this campaign tracks unnecessary plastic packaging in stores and holds major retailers accountable. Locals can help by completing a quick online audit. Help the team investigate plastic packaging in supermarkets by completing this survey.

🔴 Crackdown on Greenwashing
Boomerang Alliance is working with the ACCC to report misleading environmental claims by packaging companies. They encourage the public to report suspected greenwashing directly to the ACCC here.

 We encourage CCC supporters to amplify these campaigns — whether that means sharing petitions, raising awareness in your networks, or speaking with local representatives about stronger laws. These national changes will amplify the local reuse and upcycling work already happening right here in Central Queensland.

Containers for Change, Supporting the CCC Youth sub-committee

At the grassroots level, CCC continues to make reuse meaningful and actionable through our Containers for Change fundraising program.

By donating your 10¢ bottles and cans to Capricorn Conservation Council, you help fund our Youth Committee — an inspiring group of young environmental leaders working on sustainability initiatives across our region.

A Practical Habit You Can Start Today

Here’s one idea you can put into action right now….

Set aside a small area in your home — maybe a spot in the garage or laundry — for items you no longer need but aren’t ready to throw away. This becomes your regular spot for donations, swaps, or upcycling projects. Once it fills, take it to your local charity shop, give it away through a community noticeboard, or bring it to a swap meet.

It’s a small routine that reduces clutter, supports others, and keeps materials in use.

Reuse is our responsibility and our opportunity.

When we reuse, repair, repurpose, and recycle effectively, we reduce pollution, cut emissions, conserve natural resources, and build a more self-reliant region.

But to fully shift our society toward circular thinking, we need strong legislation, empowered communities, and shared values. CCC will continue to stand for all three — and with your help, we’ll get there faster.
