Plants of Capricornia
Capricorn Conservation Council is the principal not-for-profit environment organisation in Central Queensland. CCC was founded in 1973 and has been actively campaigning on regional environmental issues ever since. CCC is a community based conservation group with a membership of people concerned about environmental issues. CCC is governed by a Management Committee made up of a group of dedicated volunteers. CCC employs a full time Coordinator and a part time Project Officer.
Our Objectives
- To promote the natural environment and work towards ecological sustainability.
- To protect the ecological integrity, environmental values and biodiversity of CQ region.
- To prevent over-exploitation and destruction of our environment, natural resources and biota.
- To facilitate and encourage community engagement in environmental protection and conservation work.
We work towards achieving our objectives by engaging in discussion, collaboration, education and on-the-ground activities which promote the conservation of our environment. We engage with local communities, grass roots groups, other environment groups, educational institutions, governments, councils, industry and corporations who share our objectives for conservation.
The Management Committee
At the Annual General Meeting, the Management Committee is elected from within CCC's membership. The Management Committee meet on a monthly basis to provide strategic direction to CCC campaigns and focus and are responsible for governance and management of CCC business.

CCC has
contributed to best environmental outcomes for many issues in Central
Queensland. Some of the
past issues that CCC has
been actively involved in include:

CCC greatly appreciates the financial support received from the following organisations -
- Saving
the caves of Mt
Etna from limestone mining
Keeping pressure
on the government to fully investigate
environmental effects of the water pumped down the Fitzroy River after
the flooding of Ensham Mine.
- Saving Byfield and Shoalwater Bay from sand mining and a coal port
- Reduction of tree clearing in Queensland due to changes in Vegetation Management Laws
- Stopping the construction of a feedlot at Alton Downs which would have caused water quality and land degradation problems
- Minimised environmental harm to Waterpark and Sandy Creeks by participation in the Livingstone Shire's Community Environmental reference Group
- Increased public pressure on tree crop developers at Greenlakes and Paddy's Swamp to improve the outcomes for the retention of remnant vegetation
- Raising public awareness of disastrous environmental outcomes that could result form the shale oil development North of Gladstone.
